Srinagar, Oct 02: A local militant of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants outfit was killed in an encounter in Baskuchan area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday, Police said.
In a statement issued here, a Police spokesman said that based on a specific input generated by Police regarding presence of a militant in Baskuchan area of Shopian, a joint Cordon-and-Search operation (CASO) was launched by Police, Army (44R) and CRPF (178Bn) in the said area.
During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militant fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter, he said.
The spokesman said that in the ensuing encounter, 01 local militant linked with proscribed militants outfit LeT was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter.
The killed militant has been identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora Baskuchan, Shopian. As per police records, the slain was a categorized militant and involved in several terror crime cases.
Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including 01 AK rifle were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.
In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and further investigation is in progress. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any, the spokesman added.
